LOS ALAMOS, N.M.—Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) has awarded a subcontract to TerranearPMC of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and teaming partner Envirocon of Missoula, Montana, to perform cleanup activities at Technical Area-21, a former research site at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

“The TerranearPMC/Envirocon team is a welcome partner in the restart of cleanup work at TA-21,” said Joe Legare, Environmental Remediation program manager for N3B. “The safe and disciplined remediation of TA-21 is an important priority for the entire Los Alamos community,” Legare said.

Under terms of the $1.5 million subcontract, the TerranearPMC/Envirocon team will decontaminate and remove above-ground debris from TA-21, near a light industrial area of Los Alamos.

The work includes disposing of an obsolete concrete crusher and other abandoned equipment, removing utility poles and lines, removing and disposing of hundreds of tons of concrete and rebar, decontaminating two mobile enclosures and six excavators for reuse, and installing perimeter fencing.

N3B personnel have been removing vegetation to prepare for the subcontractor to start work in early November. The subcontractor is scheduled to complete its work in April 2019.

The next phase of cleanup work at TA-21 involves removing previously used underground industrial waste lines and demolishing a radioactive liquid processing facility. N3B expects to award a subcontract for this phase of work in early 2019.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear, formerly Stoller Newport News Nuclear, and BWXT Technical Services Group. N3B manages the $1.38 billion, 10-year Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract at Los Alamos National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office.
